TOOL REQUIREMENTS. Each Roofer ▇▇▇▇▇▇▇ and Journeyman Roofer will be responsible to supply and maintain the following tools: Hammer Roofers' Knife Pair Pliers Trowel Pair Snips Tape Measure Pair Gloves All tools and equipment owned by the Employer but furnished and supplied to the Employee will be used and maintained as directed. The ▇▇▇▇▇▇▇ will be re- sponsible to instruct the Employees as to the correct and safe use of such equipment. The Employer agrees to provide facilities capable of being locked for Employees to keep their tools in. ROOFER ▇▇▇▇▇▇▇ is a journeyman who has the knowledge required so that with the help of the oth- er Roofing Personnel can both supervise and perform all of the operations required to apply roofing of a qual- ity that will comply with the most rigid specifications. has the knowledge required to perform most of the op- erations required to apply roofing and with a minimum of instructions from the ▇▇▇▇▇▇▇ can perform or as- sist in the performance of all the operations. Is also one who has been grandfathered to the classification of journeyman through the Apprenticeship Program and/or has successfully completed the Apprentice- ship Program. ROOFER MATERIAL HANDLER is one with sufficient experience with a Roofing crew to be able to anticipate the requirements of the ▇▇▇▇▇▇▇ and the Journeyman Roofer and with a minimum of instruction from either will have the material needed placed in the proper location on the roof in the amount and at the time it will be required. A Roofer Material Handler is a roofer who has opted to remain in this category and does not wish to progress through the Appren- ticeship Program. He shall receive all negotiated wage increases. This category is red circled. is one who will work at the di- rection of a Material Handler and will perform work of a labourer supplying materials to be laid in a roof system by more experienced Roofing Personnel. All Roofing personnel who are presently in the clas- sification system as set out in the previous Agreement, shall complete their respective automatic progres- sion. Roofing personnel in the classification system of the previous Agreement shall be the first employees hired when available at all times until they have completed all automatic progression. Apprentices shall be indenturedto the employer and shall continue in training with such employer as long as possible. Apprentices should be tested at the conclusion of each school training period. Apprentices must attend in-school training when directed by the employer. The apprentice will advance to the next training period while waiting for the availability of an in-school train- ing program. An apprentice who fails to successfully complete the in-school training program shall be held in the current training period until the employee tries again and successfully passes the test. Within a company the apprenticeship ratio to jour- ▇▇▇▇▇▇ after the first one shall be apprentice to journeymen. (This ratio will be reviewed prior to the end of this CollectiveAgreement.)The first calendar days of employment shall be considered probationary and will be credited if the apprentice continues. Crew size may consist of Journeymen (which in- cludes Journeymen Roofers, Foremen and Red Cir- cled and Apprentices. Where there is an opening for an apprentice, a pre- apprentice shall be selected in order of seniority. Employers must have a full quota of apprentices in order to qualify to employ a apprentice for the first journeyman additional apprentice for every journeymen thereafter for every apprentice employed Should the Local Union be unable to supply addi- tional members, when after reasonable notice, eight (48) hours, the Union fails to supply qualified and competent workers requested by the Employer, then the Employer may secure from other sources any ad- ditional workers and they shall be paid at the wage rate. For the purpose of ascertaining apprenticeship quo- tas, the following applies: A Journeyman includes Foremen, Journeymen Roofers and Material Handlers Current roofer classifications and will become apprentices at the level based on man hours worked and their wages will be red circled if more than the ap- prenticeship rate. A current roofer classified at may continue as a Material Handler and the position red circled if they do not wish to progress through the apprenticeship program. These employees will not be classified as apprentices. A current roofer who is classified as a Roofer and who does not wish to write an examination and has completed hours of work as a roofer, shall be grandfathered to a journeyman after an additional hours worked from the date signified by the roofer, pro- vided he has satisfied the Local Joint Apprenticeship Committee that he is capable, qualified and compe- tent to accept the responsibilityof a journeyman. A current roofer classified as a Roofer will be granted Journeyman status at the time the Apprentice- ship Program becomes operative. When hiring or laying off apprentices, the employer shall maintain an equal distribution of apprentices and maintain the journeyman ratio as prescribed above. Apprentices shall be laid off in indentured seniority with employer. Red Circling a person presently in the Roofing in- dustry recognized by the Local Union will be red cir- cled at his present rate and will receive all applicable increases. There will be company-wide and wide seniority on hiring and lay-off The union and the employers agree the use of no- menclature is meant to refer to both genders.
