Learning Centers. When the Least Restrictive Environment (as defined by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) is a Learning Center, maximum class size shall not exceed the following:

Learning Centers. 1. Teachers assigned full-time to the Learning Centers shall be compensated in accordance with the regular salary schedule plus an additional one-sixth (1/6) per diem. 2. Full-time teachers shall be assigned to an eight and one-quarter (8¼) hour workday, including a thirty (30) minute duty free lunch. Teachers shall be assigned up to three (3) two (2) hour instructional blocks of time. The remaining time shall be for conference and preparation. Fifty five (55) minutes shall be designated as preparation time. Fifty (50) minutes shall be designated as time for calling parents, conferences with parents and/or students, calling students, and other related activities directed by the Director of Alternative Education. 3. STRS credit shall be in accordance with STRS regulations. (See Appendix C-11) 4. A minimum of two hundred and five (205) workdays shall be assigned to unit members in the school which may be different from the regular work year calendar. Time off without pay shall be developed with input from the Learning Centers with the approval of the Director of Alternative Education. The Director of Alternative Education Programs will determine the number of available workdays for each year. The work year schedule, including scheduled hours of assignment, will be established by the Director of Alternative Education after first consulting with the Learning Centers team at each site. The basic work year schedule will be established by the Director of Alternative Education by June 1 of each year. Additional workdays, which may be less than a full workday, shall be compensated at a pro rata per diem rate of pay based upon Section
Learning Centers. Assignment to learning centers pursuant to a program developed by the Superintendent of Schools limited to one such assignment per week. Assignment to learning centers shall be upon the following conditions: a. There shall be no formal observations or evaluations. However, teachers may be observed and evaluated as to whether they are complying with their obligations as to this assignment. b. Students may participate on their own volition and may be assigned to learning center by teachers, counselors and building administration. No more than seven students may participate during a particular period. The building principal shall determine which students shall participate in the event the maximum is exceeded in a given period. c. Centers are not to serve as time-out rooms or suspension centers. d. Centers are not to serve as advisor/advisee programs. e. Centers are for the purpose of reinforcing/supporting and re- teaching material previously delivered in class. f. Assignment to a learning center shall be limited to the subject for which the teacher is certified. g. Teachers shall not be responsible for grading student work. h. While no formal lesson plans are required, there must be evidence of planning and communication between the teacher assigned to the center and the classroom teacher in order to address students’ needs.
