Grade Teachers. The Board will provide elementary teachers (including art, music, physical education, reading, science, or other areas) planning time of 123 minutes per week. It is understood that the District may provide substitute teachers or other methods to satisfy the above requirement. Classroom teachers are not required to be present during special classes, but they must walk students to and from specials unless other arrangements have been made at the building level. No employee may leave the building during planning time unless approved by principal.

When a teacher loses the planning time described in subsection K.2.e.i.I, above, because a substitute teacher was not available, the teacher will be compensated at either the rate specified in Appendix C.7.a or compensatory time. III. The District will provide 180 minutes of elementary planning time each full month of school any teacher assigned to an elementary building. using substitute services. These 180 minutes are in addition to the 123 minutes already provided for elementary teachers. During partial months, this additional time will be prorated. No teachers shall receive more than 180 minutes of planning time under this provision. IV. The identified elementary classroom teachers will have the option of scheduling this additional 180 minutes in one of the following ways: (i) Schedule time once per month, or (ii) Schedule time every other week, or (iii) Schedule time after school and receive additional compensation from the District at the rate of $14.17 (to be increased if other hourly rates are increased) per 60 minutes, or (iv) Submit another option for approval that does not exceed the cost of a substitute for 180 minutes. V. For planning purposes, the teachers need to notify the appropriate building administrator and the Association office of the option they have selected by the first Friday of each school year (parties will agree on an alternate date if this is initiated during a school year). The building administrator will work with the teacher to schedule their option for the 180 minutes of planning time in a manner that is efficient for school operations. class is a term of art where the class is made up of students at multiple grade levels in one general education elementary classroom. A split class is formed due to small class sizes in two grade levels resulting in the creation of one class containing two grades with one teacher rather than two smaller classes for each grade with two teachers.

Some of the end of the year goals for your child are: ♦ Reading /Language Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehen- sion at grade level or beyond. ♦ Math Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction. Some of the key connection with families will be: ♦ Utilizing the district recommended English Language Arts program Benchmark teachers will provide Home Connection Letters and information, throughout the school year ♦ Provide students with daily take home folders containing im- portant information. ♦ Provide students with a weekly reading log on which students should track their nightly reading. ♦ Send home sight words, reading materials and homework to rein- force reading fluency and vocabulary skills. ♦ Provide links to fun math and reading websites to assist students in their understanding of math and reading concepts. Below is a list of ideas to help all families begin the process of engaging in learning. ♦ Try to attend Family events presented by the school, the district, or community education partners such as the public library. ♦ Maintain communication with my child’s teacher(s) ♦ Read with your child 15 minutes a day. ♦ Help my child to practice their sight words regularly. ♦ Have fun with math and reading, with your child. ♦ Read the classroom and school newsletter.
