Common use of Continuing Contingent Appointment Clause in Contracts

Continuing Contingent Appointment. When a contingent faculty member has been employed for five (5) years at NMU they shall be granted a renewable three-year Continuing Contingent Status appointment. This status would remain in effect as long as the faculty member has taught eight (8) credits in the previous three (3) semesters. Earning this status does not guarantee the faculty member a teaching assignment or future employment with the university. Such teaching assignments will be determined using applicable sections in this Agreement governing Contingent Faculty Appointments. This appointment does not preclude the university from canceling the appointment for legitimate university business reasons or dismissal of the faculty member. This status permits the faculty member to maintain university privileges between assignments. These include: NMU-issued computer, NMU email, AAUP listserve, access to the building and department facilities in accordance with department policy, library privileges, travel fund requests and participation in conferences, participation in University committees and workshops, participation in department activities as determined in department bylaws, and self-pay access to the Health Center. Continuing Contingent faculty will receive relevant department communications but any omissions are non-grievable.
