Bolt Holes. New rail bolt holes shall be drilled only with a rail drill. No other method is permissible. Rail shall be drilled before joint bars are applied. Drilling shall be performed by either, center punching hole location and drilling or by using a proper template. Holes are to be of the size prescribed for rail section and joint bar type.

Drilling shall be performed by either, center punching hole location and drilling or by using a proper template. Holes are to be of the size prescribed for rail section and joint bar type. If crossing joints are intended to be welded, then a whole must note be drilled within 4.5 inches of the rail end.
