Backfilling. The purpose of this section is to provided opportunities for employees to temporarily increase their number of hours of work, temporarily increase their wages and/or acquire experience in a different job assignment. 8.5.1 When the District determines to fill a position held by an employee who is temporarily absent from work for a period of time known by the District to last 30 working days or more, prior to seeking an outside applicant (substitute) the District shall post the temporary vacancy at all work sites for not less than six working days. During the posting period the District may fill the temporary vacancy at its discretion. The District shall select an existing District employee applicant to backfill if the Superintendent or his/her designee determines that the employee has a reasonable chance of succeeding in the position. 8.5.2 The following are exempt from the backfilling obligations described in 8.5 through 8.5.6 and may be filled at the District’s discretion: (a) any temporary vacancy created after the first backfilling of the initial temporary vacancy, and (b) absences anticipated to last less than 30 working days.
