Common use of Backfilling Clause in Contracts

Backfilling. (i) Excavated material used as backfilling to excavations or completed structures shall be free from rubbish, vegetation, clods and lumps and shall be approved by the Engineer. The approved materials shall be placed in layers, not exceeding 225 mm in depth before compaction and shall be compacted to a dry density not less than ninety-five percent of the maximum dry density obtained by the test in Part VII of I.S. 2720 or to such higher density as is specified hereinafter. During compaction the backfill shall have a uniform moisture content equal to or a little above the optimum moisture content recorded in the I.S.
