Common use of Temporary Full-Time Appointments Clause in Contracts

Temporary Full-Time Appointments. Where there is a temporary need for a full-time faculty member, a temporary (or contract) appointment may be made, in accordance with the procedures set forth in paragraph 3.01 of this Agreement, for a period not to exceed one year. There shall not be more than thirty-five (35) temporary (or contract) full-time faculty members during any semester. The parties shall seek to avoid the over concentration of temporary (or contract) full-time faculty in any department. A temporary (or contract) appointment may be renewed no more than three times; provided, however, that upon a recommendation by the Department Personnel and Budget Committee, an exception beyond three (3) renewals can be made. The number of renewals may not exceed five (5) for a total of six (6) years of full-time employment. If any faculty member, initially hired as a temporary (or contract) appointment, applies for a tenure-track position, the period of the temporary (or contract) appointment (and any renewals thereof) shall not be counted toward the evaluation period for tenure set forth in Article 9 of the University Statutes. The normal teaching load for temporary (or contract) full-time faculty members is 12 credits per semester.
