Proof Required. The Department Head shall approve sick leave only after having ascertained that the absence was for an authorized reason. The Department Head may require the employee to submit substantiating evidence including but not limited to a physician's certificate in accordance with Federal and State law. The request for substantiating evidence must be made either on or before the time the employee informs the department of his/her absence or prior to the employee's return to work. If the Department Head does not consider the evidence adequate, the employee’s request for the use of sick leave shall not be approved.
