A Permit to Work System clause establishes a formal process for authorizing and controlling specific high-risk activities within a workplace. It typically requires that before commencing tasks such as hot work, electrical maintenance, or confined space entry, workers must obtain a written permit outlining safety precautions, responsibilities, and necessary approvals. This system ensures that hazards are identified and managed, reducing the risk of accidents and ensuring compliance with safety regulations.
Permit to Work System. NO work shall be carried out without a "PERMIT TO WORK"  The Contractor’s Responsible Person must satisfy himself that all sources of possible danger are isolated. The Contractor must also make provision for sufficient Authorise Supervisor(s) depending on the contractual obligations. The Authorised Supervisor will need to undergo a week’s training, which will be arranged at a suitable Eskom facility. This person must also pass an exam to verify his understanding of the procedure, after which he/she will need to be interviewed by a panel to discuss the practical understanding of being appointed as an Authorised Supervisor.  A Master Permit to Work is used on declared major outages, details can be found in local procedure LBA 00085. Permit changes are made during the dead time, if it is required by the Contractor that a certain supply be made available or plant tested than this can be applied for at the Outage Management Meeting at least 1 day in advance.  Plant with a prohibitive sign attached may only be operated by appointed Eskom personnel. Permit to Work System. Contractor shall ensure that it conducts its operations under a “Permit to Work System” that at a minimum meets Company’s requirement and general industry standards. Company shall have the right to review and endorse Contractor’s plan prior to implementation.
