Pay for Higher Class Work Clause Samples

The 'Pay for Higher Class Work' clause ensures that employees who are temporarily assigned to perform duties of a higher classification than their usual role receive compensation at the higher pay rate. Typically, this clause applies when an employee covers for a higher-level position due to absence, vacancy, or special projects, and the pay adjustment is provided for the duration of the assignment. Its core function is to fairly compensate employees for additional responsibilities and to prevent employers from exploiting workers by assigning higher-level tasks without appropriate pay.
Pay for Higher Class Work. Employees performing assigned short-term work above their normal classification will be compensated fairly as follows:
Pay for Higher Class Work. An employee assigned to perform the ordinary day-to-day duties and responsibilities of a position of a higher classification for a period of four (4) or more consecutive hours in a working day shall receive the next higher dollar step in the higher pay range, or five percent (5%) over the employee's present wage rate, whichever is greater. The authorizing form will confirm that the employee was specifically directed to perform the duties and responsibilities of the higher position for four (4) or more hours in a working day. This provision is not applicable to situations deemed by the District to be for training or educational purposes. Work assignments shall not be changed for the sole purpose of evading the requirement of providing acting pay to an employee who would otherwise be eligible.
