Parenting. The role of parenting is a complex experience which includes a variety of expectations and responsibilities (Xxxxxx, 2000; Xxxxxxxxxx et al., 2018). Within the AOTA’s Occupational Therapy Practice Framework (OTPF, 2020), parenting, or child rearing, is defined as “providing care and supervision to support the developmental needs of a child” (p. 31) and is cited as being a complex occupation that invokes both physical and cognitive aspects. Other sources provide similar definitions about providing care and physical support for child health and developmental needs (Xxxxxx, 2000; Xxxxx et al., 2019). Typically, a parent is defined as the individual who provides the child with care and support, but other sources provide a broader definition (Xxxxxx, 2000; Xxxxx et al., 2019; Xxxxxxxx, 2020). The title of ‘parent’ involves multiple dimensions such as biological, legal, and sociocultural parenthood (Macvarish, 2020). In terms of biology, a parent is the individual who provides the genetic material to produce a child, while a legal parent is an individual who has been assigned legal responsibility for a child through a court. Being a parent is a lifelong responsibility that is a social institution as well as an individual process (Macvarish, 2020). For the purposes of this paper, a parent will be defined as an individual who has legal, biological, or social responsibility for a child and provides the child with physical and emotional support to promote healthy physical and developmental functioning. Parenting is considered an individualized experience and there are a variety of factors that can influence this role including cultural expectations and personal factors.
