Laboratory Instruction Clause Samples

The Laboratory Instruction clause outlines the requirements and procedures for conducting laboratory-based teaching or training sessions. It typically specifies the responsibilities of instructors, safety protocols to be followed, and the use of laboratory equipment and materials. For example, it may require instructors to provide safety briefings before experiments and ensure all participants use protective gear. The core function of this clause is to ensure that laboratory instruction is conducted safely, efficiently, and in compliance with institutional or legal standards, thereby minimizing risks and promoting effective learning.
Laboratory Instruction. “Laboratory instruction” shall mean that mode of instruction which consists of student learning activities, under the direction and supervision of a faculty member, using instruments, equipment and techniques appropriate to a particular discipline in which the student observes or measures phenomena, conducts experiments, undertakes projects, acquires specialized skills, and pursues similar kinds of experiences. “Laboratory instruction” shall not include instruction in a language laboratory.
Laboratory Instruction. Instructors who teach a course with a laboratory component shall receive credit for teaching the laboratory component of the course according to the following scale: (1) If the course instructor is solely responsible for organizing, instructing and assessing student performance, s/he will receive credit equivalent to one-half (1/2) the number of laboratory contact hours per week per term.
Laboratory Instruction. Instructors (e.g. academic members and Instructional Associates) who teach the laboratory component of a course shall receive credit according to the following scale: (1) If the lab instructor is solely responsible for organizing, instructing and assessing student performance, s/he will receive credit equivalent to one-half (1/2) the number of laboratory contact hours per week per term. (2) If the lab instructor is responsible for the overall organization and day-to-day operation of the lab, the evaluation of student performance, and s/he spends a portion of each laboratory period instructing students but receives some assistance, for example, the help of a student assistant working under the supervision of the lab instructor, the lab instructor will receive credit equivalent to one-quarter (1/4) the number of laboratory contact hours per week per term. (3) If the lab instructor is responsible for the overall organization of the lab, the evaluation of student progress and some aspects of lab instruction, but the day- to-day operation of the lab and the bulk of student instruction is handled by a professional lab assistant, normally possessing at least an undergraduate degree and/or specialized training and working with minimum supervision, the lab instructor will receive credit equivalent to one-eighth (1/8) the number of laboratory contact hours per week per term. (4) If the lab instruction is shared between the course instructor and an Instructional Associate, and the course instructor is responsible for the overall organization of the lab, the evaluation of student progress and some aspects of lab instruction, but the day-to-day operation of the lab and the bulk of student instruction is handled by the Instructional Associate, the course instructor will receive credit equivalent to one-eighth (1/8) the number of laboratory contact hours per week per term and the Instructional Associate will receive credit equivalent to three-eighths (3/8) the number of laboratory contact hours per week per term. (5) If the lab is handled solely by the lab instructor, the course instructor will receive no credit. For the purposes of this section, a lab must meet the following criteria: (a) be listed in the calendar, (b) be scheduled in the time-table at a specific time and in a single location, (c) run for a minimum of ten (10) weeks per term and (d) at least twenty percent (20%) of the student's final grade be based on work done in the lab.
