Definition of a Work Cell. 38.6 A work cell is a production unit where different classifications are employed to produce a specific range of parts (example: “Aluminum Cell”). When a work cell is being established, workers holding each of the classifications within the cell will be invited to bid on the cell positions and will be selected on the basis of seniority. If insufficient numbers of people in a classification bid, the junior person in each of the classifications will be assigned to the cell. Cell members will clean their own work areas and machines.
