If mismanaged and allowed to go to seed, many cover crops can quickly become weedy, and several have become prominent invasive species. Oats is the only approved cover crop for Des Moines Parks and Recreation Community Gardens. The plant is winter- killed, which ensures the oats won’t go to seed or become weedy.
