Axial Coding. Axial coding is described in Benaquisto (2012, p. 52) as the phase where categories and concepts that stand out are enhanced. The relationships between categories and concepts are pursued and researchers during this step ask questions on the data presented in a focused manner.
Axial Coding. Figure 4.6 below is a snapshot of the axial coding process. Figure 4.6: Axial coding process Source: Researcher’s own construct Figure 4.6 depicts the second step in the coding process in which individual codes are grouped into a coding family which shows how the individual codes correlate with the grouped family code. This process is used to break down open codes into a more manageable group of codes called Axial codes.
