The Earth Summit (1992) was one of the first international meetings to acknowledge the severe effects of human activity on the environment. The Kyoto Protocol (1997) stipulated mandatory reduction of greenhouse gas emissions for only a few countries. Many countries like the US did not ratify the protocol as it was legally binding in nature. The first round of Kyoto commitments ended in 2012 and the COP 15 proposed the Copenhagen Accord.
