The Fundão dam break on 5 November 2015 was a tragic event that caused social and environmental impacts. The Fundão dam was part of the Samarco iron ore operation in Minas Gerais state in Brazil. BHP Billiton Brasil Ltda. (BHP) and Vale S.A. (Vale) each have a 50 per cent shareholder interest in the Samarco joint venture. Samarco, Vale and BHP are deeply saddened by the event and sincerely apologize to the communities and families who have been impacted.
