Tape shall be manufactured with integral wires, foil backing, or other means of enabling detection by a metal detector or underground cable detector typically used in the OSP industry when tape is buried up to 3-feet deep. The materials in the warning tape shall be chemically inert and shall not degrade when exposed to acids, alkalis, and other destructive substances found in soil.

Warning Tape. All electric services for the small cell wireless infrastructure must be marked with warning tape. Detectable electrical warning tape must consist of pre‐manufactured non‐ adhesive polyethylene material that is unaffected by acids, alkalines, and other soil components. The tape must be red in color and must be, at a minimum, 3.5 mils thick and 6 inches wide. Its tensile strength must be 2,500 psi lengthwise. The electrical tape must include the following identification printed in black letters continuously along the length of the tape: “CAUTION BURIED ELECTRIC LINE BELOW”. The identification note and color of tape must conform to the requirements of the “American Public Works Association (APWA) Uniform Color Codes (Red) – Electrical Power Lines, Cables, Conduit and Lighting Cables.”
