Universal Precautions. Hospices shall: (a) Develop and implement initial orientation and ongoing education and training for all hospice workers, including students, trainees and volunteers, in the epidemiology, modes of transmis- sion and prevention of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and other blood−borne infections and the need for routine use of uni- versal blood and body−fluid precautions for all patients; (b) Provide equipment and supplies necessary to minimize the risk of infection with HIV and other blood−borne pathogens; and (c) Monitor adherence to the U.S. centers for disease control (CDC) recommended protective measures, known as universal blood and body−fluid precautions, as set out in the CDC’s publi- cation,Recommendations for Prevention of HIV Transmission in Health Care Settings, August 1987 and the update published in Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR), Vol. 37/No. 24, June 24, 1988, pp. 377−382. When monitoring reveals a fail- ure to follow recommended precautions, counseling, education or re−training shall be provided and, if necessary, appropriate disci- plinary action shall be taken for failure to comply with policies under this subsection.
