The individual had already been in contact with the CVC in Hereford where she was advised to pursue setting up a CIC and wanted more information on this from PAVO. An initial meeting took place between the individual and the Supporting Communities Development Officer to talk about different charitable statuses, and perhaps more importantly the initial steps that needed to be taken to get the project underway including feasibility, community engagement, and getting a team of people together to form a group to move the project forward. A discussion also took place on the advantages and disadvantages of different legal structures including CIC, CIO, Company Limited by Guarantee etc. A few weeks after the meeting the individual concluded that setting up a charity is not the best option for her, as she wants to generate an income from the project whilst at the same time being the being the main driving force, so is now looking at taking her idea forward as a business venture. How did the Supporting Communities Project help? By providing information on the steps that need to be taken in setting up and governing a charity the individual was able to make an informed decision that to achieve her aims setting up a business rather than a charity will be her best option.
