STATE-OF-THE ART OF BIODIESEL IN EU27 Sample Clauses

STATE-OF-THE ART OF BIODIESEL IN EU27. Current technology mainly involves the production of biodiesel from vegetable oils such as rapeseed and the production of ethanol by fermentation of sugar streams either obtained directly from sugar beet, or though hydrolysis of starch from wheat and other cereals. Fats and oils of biological origin are predominantly triacylesters of glycerol (triglycerides). These form the major feedstock for the generation of methyl esters in Europe. The methyl esters are commonly referred to as biodiesel. The so-called “ester-pathway” includes the intensification and evolution of biodiesel processes and the conversion of triglycerides into other fuels. Diesel vehicles have gained an increased market share in the sector of passenger cars during the last decade. They remain the main type of power train for commercial vehicles.
