SPECIAL STUDIES PROGRAM. (a) An employee will be entitled to apply to undertake a Special Studies Program (SSP) provided that it will commence no sooner than three years after entry on duty. The period of three years may be reduced if prior service at another university has been recognised for this purpose. (b) The University will recognise prior continuous paid service with other Australian higher education institutions as qualifying service when considering applications for SSP. Provided that if an employee has taken a period of time on SSP at another university, that period will be considered. (c) Eligibility for recognition of prior service with another University will be dependent upon continuity of employment between the other University and UNSW. (d) If there is not more than two months between the cessation of employment with another university and commencement with UNSW, continuity will be deemed not to have been broken, but the period between cessation and commencement will not be taken into account in determining length of service for the purposes of this clause.

(b) All academic staff (research staff, education focused and teaching and research combined track) who are meeting performance expectations may apply for SSP or Internal Release (c) SSP or Internal Release will normally be for periods of three to six months. For teaching and research staff, SSP will normally be concurrent with a least one term when the employee would otherwise be teaching. (d) If an employee’s application for SSP or Internal Release is not approved, the employee is entitled, on request, to written advice from their supervisor regarding the reasons for non- approval. (e) The University will recognise prior continuous paid service with other Australian higher education institutions as qualifying service when considering applications for SSP or Internal Release. Provided that (i) if an employee has taken a period of time on SSP or Internal Release at another university, that period will be considered.
