PPT Sample Clauses

The PPT, or Principal Purpose Test, is a clause used in tax treaties to prevent treaty abuse by denying treaty benefits if obtaining those benefits was one of the principal purposes of an arrangement or transaction. In practice, tax authorities may invoke the PPT to challenge cross-border structures or transactions that appear to be designed primarily to secure reduced withholding tax rates or other treaty advantages, rather than for genuine commercial reasons. The core function of the PPT clause is to safeguard the integrity of tax treaties by ensuring that their benefits are only available for legitimate arrangements, thereby combating tax avoidance and treaty shopping.
