Postdoctoral Fellows special conditions CSIRO assists in the development of scientists and Postdoctoral Fellowships are the primary mechanism by which CSIRO delivers this assistance. CSIRO’s purpose in offering Postdoctoral Fellowships is to: • provide young scientists with the opportunity to gain experience in order to develop capability for the nation; • assist universities to produce a pool of potential employees; • refresh and add value to CSIRO’s research activities (through original insights, new knowledge and/or techniques); and • facilitate the identification and recruitment of potential science leaders. A Postdoctoral Fellowship is intended, first and foremost, to enhance the person’s research capability so that they are better able to pursue a career in science either within CSIRO or beyond. The following special conditions apply to appointments of Postdoctoral Fellows:
Postdoctoral Fellows. All Postdoctoral Fellows shall enroll in employee benefit plans for which they are eligible according to the terms of those plans. All Postdoctoral Fellows who hold an appointment of greater than or equal to 0.5 FTE and greater than or equal to a six (6) month term will be eligible for:
Postdoctoral Fellows who are unable to work because of illness or injury shall inform their supervisor as soon as possible and promptly submit the reasonable supporting documentation required.
Postdoctoral Fellows. Single and long-term research visits (e.g., 6-12 months). The time spent in Europe will be in addition to (rather than in lieu of) their NSF-funded postdoctoral fellowship (usually 2 years in duration). IMPLEMENTATION The following set of operational steps will be used to implement the programme: > The European Research Council Executive Agency (ERCEA) solicits expressions of interest from Principal Investigators (PIs) holding ERC grants in hosting U.S.-based scientists to contribute to their teams for short or longer periods with the travel expenses between US and Europe covered by the NSF. > The ERCEA sends to the NSF a listing of the interested PIs/teams, together with the publishable description of their respective ERC-funded projects. > The NSF informs CAREER awardees and NSF Postdoctoral Research Fellows of the collaborative opportunity through issuance of a Dear Colleague Letter that describes the goals of the programme and the collaborative opportunities as defined by the European researchers and provides application procedures, eligibility considerations, and relevant policies and requirements, as appropriate. STEERING GROUP A Steering Group consisting of two representatives from each side is hereby established. As necessary, each side may designate a limited number of additional participants to the meetings. It shall be co-chaired by the NSF and the Head of the Scientific Management Department of the ERCEA. Operational guidance and management plans consistent with the needs of the respective sides in order to implement this Arrangement will be adopted by the Steering Group. The Steering Group will review the activities under this Implementation Arrangement and decide if any adjustment will be necessary on a periodic basis. The Steering Group will meet at least once per year, and its meetings will be held virtually or alternately at NSF and ERCEA headquarters.
Postdoctoral Fellows. A Postdoctoral Fellow must hold a PhD or equivalent qualification. They will work on project/s requiring a significant degree of skill, initiative, independence and originality of thought, which creatively extends the bounds of existing knowledge. The employment of a Postdoctoral Fellow is fixed term because it is always dependent on research project funding streams. The fixed term of employment for a Postdoctoral Fellow can be up to five years, dependent on the length of the research project and availability of funding.
