Elementary School Day. Employees teaching in the elementary schools will be assigned no more than an average of five (5) hours of instruction per day.
Section 12.4.1 Elementary classroom teachers shall be provided one-hundred-fifty (150) minutes of planning time per week by music, P.E., and library media specialists. Other elementary bargaining unit members shall be provided these one-hundred-fifty (150) minutes through scheduling decisions.
Section 12.4.2 Each elementary teacher will receive an average two-hundred-fifty (250) minutes planning time per week per year. This elementary planning time will occur within the student day. Continuous blocks of time are preferable and no blocks of time shall be less than twenty-five (25) minutes. Recess time shall only be considered as part of a planning time block if such period of time is uninterrupted by passing or travel time. Each building without a cafeteria will be allocated twelve-hundred dollars ($1,200) per elementary FTE teacher per year. Each building with a cafeteria will be allocated six-hundred dollars ($600) per elementary FTE teacher per year. Each building staff shall determine how this allocation is to be spent to provide for an additional one-hundred (100) minutes, on average, planning time per FTE per week. Use of release time for planning time purposes shall only be considered if other alternatives are not possible.
Section 12.4.3 Except during periods of inclement weather or an emergency, elementary teachers will not be assigned supervision of students before or after school; during the a.m., p.m. and noon recess; or during the loading and unloading of buses. Teachers may be required to supervise students during the students' lunch period.
Section 12.4.4 During periods of inclement weather when it becomes necessary to call a rainy day recess, buildings will have written procedures in place. Such procedures will attempt to minimize assigning teachers for supervision.

Elementary School Day. The elementary day shall include the following elements:
1. With the exception of the two PD rotation days per quarter, elementary Members shall receive consecutive minutes of continuous personal planning time per day equal to the length of the special area instruction. Such special area instruction shall not be less than thirty (30) consecutive minutes. Elementary teachers shall also have time for conferences, evaluation, planning and collaboration during any minutes prior to student arrival, after student dismissal, and the additional thirty

2. All full-time classroom teachers shall be guaranteed a preparation period each day at the time when their students are attending special area classes. The length of such period shall be equal to the time of the special class, but no less than 30 consecutive minutes. Full-time special area teachers shall be guaranteed a preparation period each day of no less than 30 minutes.

Elementary School Day. [In consideration of the different use of early release days at the elementary schools the five (5) minutes which was added to the elementary teacher day to provide for team planning time is eliminated.]
1. Elementary teachers shall be in their respective buildings forty (40) minutes before the commencement of classes. Thirty (30) consecutive, uninterrupted minutes of this time shall be for planning purposes. In addition, a forty-five (45) minute uninterrupted, duty-free lunch period shall be provided elementary teachers.
2. Additionally, the elementary staff may initiate with the principal a procedure for providing team planning at all grade levels. If there is an agreement that does not impact other school operations as determined by the school superintendent, the parties may proceed with implementation.
3. A one-hour uninterrupted, duty-free lunch period shall be provided psychologists.
4. All Canton City School elementary teachers will be released from normal teaching and supervisory responsibilities at the end of the school day for the same one and one-half (1- 1/2) hour period each month. This non-instructional, non-supervisory time shall be used for the purpose of instructional improvement, including development, review and assessment of plans for differentiation of instruction, response to testing results, and other collaborative measures to improve student learning. The schedule of these meetings shall be set at the start of the school year and announced to all elementary teachers and principals. The topic of the meeting shall be divided as follows: Three (3) shall be devoted to grade level meetings, with required attendance for all elementary teachers at the appropriate grade level session. A committee of teachers and administrators shall plan these sessions. Three (3) shall be devoted to team planning, with the teachers involved, in collaboration with the principal, required to plan and share an agenda in advance of the meeting and to complete a reporting form to indicate the work undertaken and accomplished during the meeting. Elementary School Day. The elementary school day schedule will be implemented in accordance with the following. This schedule will remain in effect until an Elementary School Day Schedule Committee and/or the District recommend otherwise at which time this item will be bargained.
a. Planning Time: 450 minutes of planning weekly for all employees as follows:
i. The first 45 minutes of the workday employees will continue to participate in student support teams as defined by the building and IEP's;
ii. 225 minutes of planning time per week in a minimum of 45 minute blocks to be used for individual planning time except on SMART/adjusted schedule days where the blocks shall be at least fifteen (15) minutes.
b. Team planning time is encouraged for elementary staff preparation and planning as a team by grade level, multi-grade level and/or specialists.
c. Building schedules should provide for 3 to 4 days of uninterrupted instructional blocks of time.
d. Buildings will have the flexibility to design their own instructional blocks.
e. Substitute teachers will be hired if specialists are absent, pursuant to Article 3.16.
f. The Schedule is designed to meet the state required minimum instructional time as follows:.
i. The student day will begin 50 minutes after the start of the certificated contracted day. The student day will end 20 minutes before the end of the certificated contracted day.
ii. At a minimum, there will be a lunch break and lunch recess (35 minutes for students), plus an additional morning and/or afternoon recess (10 minutes). Certificated staff will not be required to cover lunch recess and will have a thirty (30) minute duty free lunch period. For recess time in addition to the lunch recess, each elementary building leadership team will develop at least two recess supervision plans. The building leadership team will address the health and safety of students and staff and the instructional program in development of the coverage plan. Prior to the implementation of the recess supervision plan, each elementary building staff will approve the plan by majority consensus. No certificated staff schedule will run for more than 150 consecutive minutes of solitary responsibility for students.
g. Teachers on (.5) contracts will be allowed to adjust their schedules individually to satisfy program needs with the approval of the principal.
