Co-Occurring Services. Follow a program that uses a stage-wise treatment model that is non-confrontational, follows behavioral principles, considers interactions between mental illness and substance use and has gradual expectations of abstinence. Mental health and substance use research has strongly indicated that to recover fully, a Client with a co-occurring disorder needs treatment for both diagnoses, as focusing on one does not ensure the other will go away. Co-occurring services integrate assistance for each condition, helping people recover from both in one setting at the same time. All treatment team members shall be co-occurring capable. When appropriate, the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) criteria shall be utilized to identify an appropriate level of co-occurring treatment indicated. Individuals with co-occurring substance use issues shall be provided a range of co-occurring services including linkage to medical detox, social detox, residential treatment, etc.
