Common use of Class Size Maxima Clause in Contracts

Class Size Maxima. a. It is agreed that the Joint Secondary Staffing Committee will meet on December 10, 2003; January 13, 2004; January 27, 2004; and February 10, 2004 to monitor and address issues related to class size. b. For the 2003-2004 school year, any additional sections generated by enrolment shall be allocated to schools by the Joint Secondary Staffing Committee. The Committee will use the sections to address the following issues: i) class sizes ii) school program iii) staffing needs (eg. resolution of splits, administrative transfers). c. For the second semester school year 2003-2004, the Joint Secondary Staffing Committee will review each stacked class (either multi-level or multi-grade or restructured), each class of Co-operative Education and each Focus Program, and class sizes for the ESL program with the intent to make recommendations for the 2004-2005 school year. d. The Count dates for class sizes shall be September 30 for Semester 1 and February 28 for Semester 2 classes. 9.9.2.1 The Parties agree that the maximum class size will be as follows: ▇▇▇▇▇▇▇ ▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇ / ▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇▇ English, Mathematics, Science 17 - Workplace Courses including Computer-based Technology - 23 Applied Courses English, Mathematics, Science, French, Geography, History 24 - Open Level Courses (not listed above) & Computer- based Technology 26 27 Academic Courses English, Mathematics, Science, French, Geography, History 28 - College destination English, Science, Computer-based Courses, French - 27 College Destination other than the above - 28 University/ College Courses - 30 University destination English, Science, Computer-based Courses, French - 28 University Destination other than the above - 32 International Baccalaureate Programs / Enriched 32 32 Literacy 17 20 Technology Courses (not Computer-based) 20 22 Integrated Technology (Shop safety considered) 24 Family Studies 20 26 Art 26 28 Drama / Music 28 28 Physical and Health Education 28 28 9.9.2.2 The Board and the Bargaining Unit will work co-operatively to monitor the application of the class size maxima. A flex factor not exceeding 10% may apply to each class size maximum listed above, up to a maximum of four (4) additional students per teacher per semester. An individual teacher=s workload shall not exceed the maximum of four (4) additional students above the class size maxima unless approved by the Joint Secondary Staffing Committee. 9.9.3.1 The Board will staff secondary schools in accordance with the Ontario Education Act, as amended, and the Regulations made thereunder, which prescribes a Board-wide average aggregate class size for secondary schools of 21:1, or as consistent with regulation, as calculated on the reporting days prescribed by the Ministry of Education. 9.9.3.2 Notwithstanding the parameters set out in 9.9.3.1, additional sections may be added to achieve these class size maxima and provide quality programming for students.
