Window well definition
Window well means, for a typical double-hung window, the portion of the exterior window sill between the interior window sill or stool and the frame of the storm window, or when there is no storm window, the area that receives both the upper and lower window sashes when they are both lowered. The term includes “window trough”.

Window well means a recess in the ground around a residential dwelling to allow for ingress and egress through a window installed in a basement that is fully or partially below ground.
