Whakapapa literally means to „place in layers‟, and is the word most commonly associated with the recitation of genealogies. Yet it also serves as a metaphor for the act of Creation, for the evolution of the Universe and all living creatures within it (Karetu, 1975). According to Timoti Karetu, Whakapapa includes many spiritual, mythological and human stories that flesh out the genealogical backbone. The recitation and naming of genealogies in their proper order, is an act of sharing a way of knowing, it builds layer by layer upon the past towards the present, and on to the future.
