Traumatic Incident definition

Traumatic Incident means an incident which causes individual trauma occurring during the unit member’s scheduled work day in the course and scope of employment resulting from an event, series of events or set of circumstances that is experienced by a City employee as physically or emotionally harmful. This includes an incident resulting in a loss of life or life-threatening injury to another person. Traumatic Incidents may include but are not limited to the following: • Stalking by members of the public; • Violence occurring in City buildings or on City property; • Violence or direct threats of violence towards City staff; • Observing or being the victim of shootings, stabbings, or robberies of City staff or members of the public; • Death of a City employee within the City; • Building collapse; • Fires that result in death or a life-threatening injury to a City employee or member of the public. Nothing in this Article will expand a unit member’s right to workers’ compensation.
Traumatic Incident means a violent incident resulting in Serious Injury, a death, a suicide, or an attempted suicide where emergency medical intervention was required and provided, and where either:
Traumatic Incident. - means an abnormal experience, outside the range of usual human experiences and includes, but is not limited to: a) line-of-duty death or serious injury to other Insured Persons; b) a single incident having multiple casualties; c) death or serious injury of a child; and d) dealing with victims known to the Insured Person.

  • Each Involved/Witness Officer who was directly involved with a Critical Incident or Traumatic Incident where the leave exceeds three days shall attend a meeting with an approved psychologist from the list kept by the Administrative Services Unit in agreement with the Federation for the sole purpose of the employee’s wellness.

  • S/he will relieve the officer(s) directly involved in the Officer-Involved Traumatic Incident from all scene-related duties as soon as possible.

  • Each day of the initial period of administrative leave (up to seven days for an Involved Officer (Critical Incident); and up to three days for a Witness Officer (Critical Incident) or an officer experiencing a Traumatic Incident) shall be considered a fully paid regularly scheduled “work day.” The officer’s schedule may be adjusted in order to avoid, to the extent possible, the administrative leave from creating an overtime obligation for excess hours in a payroll period.

  • If the leave is extended beyond seven days (three days for a Witness Officer or an officer experiencing a Traumatic Incident), the period of the additional paid leave shall be scheduled such that the officer receives his/her regular pay, but no overtime pay.

  • Subject to the foregoing, officer witnesses will be required to either submit to an interview with the Traumatic Incident Investigation Team or, at the option of the Investigative Team Leader, submit his/her own written report prior to being released from duty.
