Transportation Revolution. By the 1850s horsepower was being replaced by steam power. Steam ships, clipper ships, and most importantly railroads led the revolution in transportation . Railroad transportation was fairly cheap and quickly spreading. It allowed goods to be moved in large quantities over long distances, and it reduced travel time. This linked the economies of major American cities.
