thrust definition

thrust means a pressure or pushing force exerted by one part against a touching part. Pressure is exerted sideways, pushing the shaft either right or left. This shaft movement then pushes the inner race of the bearing in the same sideways direction. The line of pressure, that is, the load, runs parallel to the shaft (fig. 5).
thrust of the fetal head is a means for assessing cephalopelvic relationship. To determine the “thrust” of the fetal head in the birth canal apply fundal pressure at the acme of uterine contraction and see the fetal head descent. If the head is tightly fixed in the pelvis CPD is diagnosed. If the head advances, there is room for further descent, at least for the 1-2 cm of the birth canal, a positive test is confirmed.
