Substantial use definition

Substantial use of an Authority to Construct means one or more of the following: (A) the equipment that constitutes the source has been purchased or acquired; (B) construction activities, other than grading or installation of utilities or foundations, have begun and are continuing; or (C) a contract to complete construction of the source within one year has been entered into.
Substantial use means that the creator receives more than normal support for the project or receives time and/or resources specifically dedicated to the project.
Substantial use of institutional resources means that in connection with the project at issue the creator of the materials received staff, salary, or material support beyond that normally provided to a typical faculty member at UI&U for activities within the scope of regular employment.

More Definitions of Substantial use

Substantial use means the significant use of college resources, whether during or after customary college business hours. The following are examples of substantial use, but in no way limit or restrict the meaning thereof:
Substantial use means that the creator of intellectual property receives more than normal support for the project or receives time and/or resources specifically dedicated to the project.

Substantial use means the significant use of College Resources, whether during or after customary College business hours. The following are examples of Substantial Use, but in no way limit or restrict the meaning: (i) extended use of time and energy by the Creator(s) in the work that results in a reduction in the expected levels of teaching, scholarship, or other activities, so that anticipated performance in these areas is at a level significantly less than normal; (ii) the use of College funds to support the work's creation; (iii) the use of other Employees in the creation of the Intellectual Property; (iv) the use of funding from gifts to the College to support creation of Intellectual Property; (v) the production of Intellectual Property under specific terms of a sponsored research grant or contract; and (vi) the use of specifically designated College funds to support the creation of the Intellectual Property involved. Normal and ordinary use of College provided office space, library resources and computers shall not constitute "Substantial Use."
Substantial use of institutional resources means that in connection with the project at issue the creator of the materials received staff, salary, or material support beyond that normally provided to a typical faculty member at UI&U for activities within the scope of regular employment. Examples of non-significant use include ordinary use of desktop computers and UI&U libraries. Should a question arise about whether support is beyond the norm, the unit leader (program or school head, dean, etc.) will provide a written opinion concerning the level of use of UI&U support and facilities. The employee may or may not obtain such an opinion prior to commencing the project. However, an employee who fails to request and receive such an advance opinion will be bound by any later determination made in the sole discretion of UI&U that the employee made substantial use of institutional resources.
