Simple asphyxiant means a substance or mixture that displaces oxygen in the ambient atmosphere, and can thus cause oxygen deprivation in those who are exposed, leading to unconsciousness and death.
Simple asphyxiant means a physiologically inert gas or vapor that acts primarily by diluting atmospheric oxy- gen below the level required to maintain proper levels of oxy- gen in the blood. Examples of simple asphyxiants are given in Appendix X of the TLV Booklet referred to in subsection (19) of this section and incorporated by reference.
