Signband definition

Signband means the flat, horizontal area on the facade usually located immediately above the storefront and below the second story window sill where signs were historically attached. Signbands can also be found immediately above the storefront display window, but below the masonry opening's lintel. On many of the brownstones with later two or three story projections, a second or third story signband is usually located above the commercial windows and below the cornice.
