Shear strength definition

Shear strength means the maximum resistance of soil to shearing stresses. A shear test indicates the ability of a soil to hold after cutting.

Examples of Shear strength in a sentence

  • The following tests will be performed: - Moisture content - Atterberg Limits (for cohesive soils) - Percent passing a No. 200 sieve - Soil classification according to USCS - Shear strength with pocket penetrometer (for cohesive soils) • Analyzing the field and laboratory data to develop geotechnical recommendations.

  • Laboratory tests will include: o Moisture and Density; o Maximum Density-Moisture Content Relationship; o Expansion Index; o Shear strength parameters; o Corrosivity tests (sulfate and chloride content, pH and resistivity).

  • Shear strength properties of selective soil samples will be quantitatively determined from direct shear testing of undisturbed and remolded specimens.

  • Shear strength of ▇▇▇▇▇ sediments is a function of hydrate saturation and confining pressure (Figure 30) (Yoneda et al., 2015).

  • Shear strength of cohesive soils will be estimated using a hand penetrometer, where applicable.

  • Shear strength parameters for the materials encountered will be determined based on shear strength data used in previous investigations, published correlations, and engineering judgment.
