Sankofa definition

Sankofa is an Akan word that means “to go back and get it.” To understand the present, we must go back to the past. The Sankofa Program focuses on contemporary civil rights and liberties issues through experiential and retrospective lenses. Each year, faculty members work with the Office of Multicultural Affairs to choose a societal issue. To explore the roots of the issue, students spend spring break with faculty and staff traveling to historical sites, museums, and monuments, as well as libraries and college campuses. Prior to traveling, students participate in three workshops in which faculty guides provide a scholarly and experiential background on issues and the sites to be toured. When students stand on ground where slaves were traded in Birmingham, Alabama, or when they visit Friendship Park on the border of San Diego and Mexico to see separated families briefly reunite through a fence for 30 minutes once a week, or when a Freedom Rider jailed at 13 in Parchman Prison tells them they don’t have to do everything, but they must do something, the realities of racial injustice, immigration, and mass incarceration come to life. After spending a week learning from these places, the people who lived these experiences, and academic and policy experts, students write a paper and give a post-trip presentation detailing what they learned about themselves through the experience, and how they can apply these lessons to life beyond college, including how they will contribute to positive social change.
Sankofa in the Akan dialect means “to go back and get what was taken” and designates the African “bird of passage” looking backward with the egg of the future in its beak. Sankofa is thus a bird whose symbolic meaning involves taking from the past what is good and bringing it into the present in order to make positive progress.” (Elia, 25).
Sankofa literally means returning for what you left or forgot; one of its symbols is represented by a bird with its head tucked between its feathers backwards (Ansa, 1995). Although Akans have some patrilineal aspects with respect to their culture, they hold on fervently towards the matrilineal system of their culture. Unlike other native groupings such as the Ewes or the Guan people who practice the patrilineal system and are also known to have powerful magical systems .Comparably to the other indigenous African cultural beliefs in elements of the universe and in connection with their matrilineal inclinations; the Akans are drawn likewise towards the earth and water nature entities (Mulumba, 1997). Some of these entities include the belief in mmoatia or dwarfs who are within the forests and the abosom or gods of the rivers and lake. These beings are communicated with through their human mediums who may be called obosomfoɔ, ɔkomfoɔ, dunsifoɔ or the sumankwafoɔ who are the spiritual heads within the Asante kingdom even till date (Amponsah, 1975).
