In respect of State Highway 1, the RLTS recognises that SH1 is the key national route linking the Waikato Region, to Auckland and surrounding regions, and is a key connection for freight movements throughout the North Island.
This must be balanced against other competing needs, and the RLTS includes 6 objectives, one of which relates to safety.
There are no specific road safety goals in the RLTS, however safety related policies include: • “promote a safer roading network • encourage a coordinated approach to road safety • promote the development of systems that improve the reporting, recording and investigation of road crashes • improve safety for cyclists and pedestrians”.
The Regional Land Transport Strategy (RLTS) 2010 identifies the Airport Rail Loop and improved SH20A and SH20B road capacity as activities of high regional significance and Auckland Council has given this project a high level of urgency.
Other regional policies in the RLTS, such as the promotion of road network upgrading and provision for cyclists and pedestrians within the roading network, are also relevant to the SMS.
Note that the RLTS has no specific safety targets or performance measures.
Environment Waikato has a Regional Land Transport Strategy (RLTS) dated 2006, in which the proposal is consistent with the following outcomes set out in the Strategy: ◗ A transport system that promotes continued growth and economic development of the region and provides for the efficient and affordable movement of people and goods in and through the region.
