Respiratory protection program. By law, NYCDOT has established a respiratory protection program. This program must be followed whenever respirators are required to be worn on the job. This program includes medical testing, “fit testing”, and worker training in the use and maintenance of respirators. For further information, contact the Office of Safety and Health (▇▇▇) ▇▇▇-▇▇▇▇ for a copy of NYCDOT’s Respiratory Protection Program. In addition to the medical testing required to wear a respirator, employees performing pigeon dropping removal must receive a specific medical examination which includes medical/work history, chest X-ray, physical examination, blood test and pulmonary function test. Only workers with a positive histoplasmin skin test and clear chest X-rays, as determined by an occupational health physician, will be allowed to work in pigeon dropping removal operations (as per USDOH CDC (Centers for Disease Control)). According to the NYC Department of Sanitation, treated waste can be disposed of as regular sanitation. If this policy changes in the future, the EIC via the Office of Safety and Health will inform the Contractor of pigeon droppings removal programs. Contractor shall avoid the use of high-pressure sprays to remove droppings as this may aerosolize the droppings and create an airborne hazard. A physician shall be called immediately if any worker experiences any of the symptoms associated with exposure to pigeon droppings. Said physician should be notified that workers were exposed to pigeon droppings at Work Sites.
