[and] one should deal with all persons as if they had a high dignity.” At the same time, singlemindedness, as one quotation from Zhou Dunyi shows, “is having no desires.” Put together, as de Bary argues, the Heart Classic, supplemented by Zhen Dexiu’s other writings, “probably represents a more extreme view of human desires as evil, and a more austere, straitlaced ideal of human conduct than can be found in the Ch’eng brothers or Chu Hsi [Zhu Xi],” which later became “accepted as orthodox Chu Hsi teaching.”47
