percussion means impacting material with the flat, circular end of a one inch diameter steel rod weighing three pounds, by releasing the steel rod a distance of forty inches above the surface of the material. The material shall be placed on a sheet of lead, of hardness number 3.5 to 4.5 on the Vickers scale, and not more than one inch thick, supported by a smooth, essentially unyielding surface.
