PDF/A definition

PDF/A means an ISO-standardized version of the Portable Document Format (PDF) specialized for the digital preservation of electronic documents.
PDF/A means the non-proprietary ISO 19005 standard providing for the longevity of semantic electronic documents.
PDF/A means a subset of PDF that is an electronic document file format for long-term preservation of electronic documents that ensures the documents can be reproduced the exact same way in years to come. A key element is the requirement for PDF/A documents to be 100 percent self-contained. All of the information necessary for displaying the document in the same manner every time is embedded in the file. This includes, but is not limited to, all content (text, raster images and vector graphics), fonts, and color information.

Examples of PDF/A in a sentence

  • Currently, electronic documents should be submitted on CD in high resolution PDFA (minimum 300 dpi) PDF/A format.

  • To switch from PDF/A-1b, which is the default option, to the other PDF/A options click Configure Output then select PDF/A-2b or 3b and click OK.

  • To create PDF/A files, print to docuPrinter, then in the "Save As" window (see screenshot below) select "PDF/A document" as output file format and press the Save button.
