Opticon. . „Pan‟ is a Greek word which means „all‟, and „Opticon‟ means „to observe.‟ Panopticon is basically an architectural work designed by Jeremy Bentham who was an English philosopher and a jurist. As a jurist, he designed the panopticon so that he can study the theory of laws by observing the behavior of the prisoners. So, panopticon is basically a prison like structure to gaze upon the activity of the people. Based on that, the famous social theorist and philosopher, Michel Foucault presented his doctrine that every institution in the society works as a panopticon where we are being watched by someone. Foucault in his book titled Discipline & Punish: The Birth of the Prison said, “The Panopticon is a marvelous machine which, whatever use one may wish to put it to, produces homogeneous effects of power” (202).
