Octet, definition

Octet, then, appropriates meta means to transcend meta limitations; by announcing its own mediation, it aims at invitation over alienation. Boswell acknowledges that the work, in an intertextual move, “[borrows] its premise from John Updike’s 1979 story ‘Problems,’” and summarizes that “the piece consists of six short vignettes, or actually story premises, presented in the form of ‘pop quiz’ questions, each of which ends with a question for the reader” (Understanding 185). And, indeed, in “Octet” the narrator playfully probes the reader with a series of hypotheticals and pop- quiz premises. The narrator actually addresses the reader directly with the second person in the hypothetical premise of POP QUIZ 9: “You are, unfortunately, a fiction writer”
