National Provider Identification (NPI) means federally administered provider number mandated for use on HIPAA covered transactions; individuals, provider organizations, and subparts of provider organizations that meet the definition of health care provider (45 CFR 160.103) and who conduct HIPAA covered transactions electronically are eligible to apply for an NPI. Medicare and Medicaid covered entities are required to apply for an NPI.
