Intercede definition
Intercede means to act between two parties with the thought of reconciling the two of them. The prayer of intercession means standing in the gap in prayer on behalf of another. God said something to Israel through the prophet Isaiah, which shows that God desires his people to intercede on behalf of others. This verse implies that if someone had stirred himself up to prayer and interceded and called upon God, judgment on the nation of Israel could have been stayed or stopped! Look at the similar statement in Ezekiel. ▪ Abraham’s Intercession Read Genesis 18: 23-32 example of Abraham’s intercession, when he learned about the impending judgment upon the inhabitants of Sodom and Gomorrah, he stood in the gap on their behalf. If under the Old Covenant ▇▇▇▇▇▇▇ interceded for other people and God heard him, how much more will God hear our prayers under the New Covenant? Will He not hear our prayers for cities and nations for the sake of His children who live in them? He will if we will intercede as ▇▇▇▇▇▇▇ did. ▪ The Holy Spirit Helps us to Intercede We can intercede with our understanding, as ▇▇▇▇▇▇▇ did or we can mediate with our spirits in tongues or in groanings and travail. But remember that intercession can only be accomplished by the leading and guiding of the Holy Spirit. Romans 8:26 “In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express.” 1 Corinthians 14:14 “For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my mind is unfruitful.” You can say what you want or desire and even quote scriptures, but when it comes to prayer for others, we don’t know what to pray for as we ought. But thank God, the Spirit helps our infirmities. An infirmity is any weakness - which would include a lack of knowledge about how to pray. He makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered in articulate speech. (Romans 8:26) Groanings are inspired by the Holy Spirit. They come from within you and escape your lips. Prayer with groanings is one way of making intercession. Remember that intercession is praying for others and not yourself.
