Illness or Sickness definition

Illness or Sickness means any sudden and unexpected pathological deviation from the normal healthy state, marked by interruption, cessation or disorder of body functions, systems or organs as confirmed such by a Registered Medical Practitioner.

  • If an Insured Person suffers a covered Illness or Sickness or Disease for which benefits, are payable under more than one such Similar Policy issued by Us, then the Insured Person shall have the right to require a settlement of his claim in terms of any of his policies and contribution as defined in the policy will not apply.

  • Rehabilitation Incentive benefit We will pay a benefit of three times your Insured Monthly Benefit if you return to paid Full-time Employment after attending a rehabilitation program that is part of a structured return to work program that is reasonably necessary to assist in your rehabilitation back to work following your Illness or Sickness, or is otherwise approved by us, and you remain in paid Full-time Employment for six consecutive months.

  • Determination that fee(s) or services are reasonable will be made by the Plan Administrator, taking into consideration unusual circumstances or complications requiring additional time, skill and experience in connection with a particular service or supply; industry standards and practices as they relate to similar scenarios; and the cause of Injury, Illness, or Sickness necessitating the service(s) and/or charge(s).

  • For the avoidance of doubt, no Benefit is payable in respect of death or disability arising from Illness or Sickness, (including any Infectious Diseases).

  • For the avoidance of doubt, no Benefit is payable in respect of Death or Disablement arising from Illness or Sickness (including any Infectious Diseases).

  • We will pay on a claim bought as a result of this only if Your personal representatives provide Us a signed undertaking that the amounts paid will be repaid to Us if it is discovered subsequently that You are alive.For the avoidance of doubt, no Benefit is payable in respect of death or disability arising from Illness or Sickness, (including any Infectious Diseases).

  • Rehabilitation expenses We will pay the costs of your participation in a rehabilitation program approved by us that is part of a structured return to work program and is necessary to assist in your rehabilitation back to work following your Illness or Sickness.

Related to Illness or Sickness

  • Illness means a sickness or a disease or pathological condition leading to the impairment of normal physiological function which manifests itself during the Policy Period and requires medical treatment.

  • Sickness means an illness or disease diagnosed or treated by a Physician.

  • Catastrophic illness or injury means one of the following:

  • Catastrophic illness or "Injury" means an illness or injury that is expected to incapacitate the employee for an extended period of time, or that incapacitates a member of the employee's family which incapacity requires the employee to take time off from work for an extended period of time to care for that family member, and taking extended time off work creates a financial hardship for the employee because he or she has exhausted all of his or her sick leave and other paid time off.

  • Catastrophic injury or illness means a life-threatening injury or illness of an employee or a member of an employee's immediate family that totally incapacitates the employee from work, as verified by a licensed physician, and forces the employee to exhaust all leave time earned by that employee, resulting in the loss of compensation from the state for the employee. Conditions that are short-term in nature, including, but not limited to, common illnesses such as influenza and the measles, and common injuries, are not catastrophic. Chronic illnesses or injuries, such as cancer or major surgery, that result in intermittent absences from work and that are long-term in nature and require long recuperation periods may be considered catastrophic.

  • Serious illness means an accident, injury, illness, disease, or physical or mental condition that: poses imminent danger of death; requires inpatient care in a hospital, hospice, or residential medical facility; or requires continuing in-home care under the direction of a physician or health care provider. Related current definitions are summarized in (f) below.

  • Mental, Nervous or Psychological Disorder means a mental or nervous health condition including, but not limited to: anxiety, depression, neurosis, phobia, psychosis; or any related physical manifestation.

  • Mental Sickness means any emotional, behavioral, psychological, personality, adjustment, mood or stress- related abnormality, disorder, disturbance, dysfunction or syndrome; regardless of its cause. It includes, but is not limited to:

  • Emotional abuse means behavior that could harm a child's emotional development, such as threatening, intimidating, humiliating, demeaning, criticizing, rejecting, using profane language, or using inappropriate physical restraint.

  • Catastrophic disability means a physical and not a psychological

  • Incapacitation means the state of being unable to physically or mentally make informed rational judgments and effectively communicate, and may include unconsciousness, sleep, or blackouts, and may result from the use of alcohol or other drugs. Where alcohol or other drugs are involved, evaluation of incapacitation requires an assessment of how the consumption of alcohol or drugs affects a person’s decision-making ability; awareness of consequences; ability to make informed, rational judgments; capacity to appreciate the nature and quality of the act; or level of consciousness. The assessment is based on objectively and reasonably apparent indications of incapacitation when viewed from the perspective of a sober, reasonable person.

  • Telepsychology means the provision of psychological services using telecommunication technologies.

  • Mental illness (MI) means a substantial disorder of thinking, mood, perception, orientation or memory that grossly impairs judgment, behaviour, capacity to recognise reality or ability to meet the ordinary demands of life, but does not include retardation which is a condition of arrested or incomplete development of mind of a person, specially characterised by sub normality of intelligence

  • Accident means a sudden, unforeseen and involuntary event caused by external, visible and violent means.

  • Critical Illness means an illness, sickness or disease or corrective measure as specified in Section 6 of this policy document.

  • Physical disability means a severe, chronic condition that is attributable to a physical impairment that results in substantial limitations of physical functioning in three or more of the following areas of major life activities: self-care, receptive and expressive language, learning, mobility, self-direction, capacity for independent living, and economic self-sufficiency.

  • Serious injury or illness means an Injury or Illness incurred in the line of duty that may render the member of the Armed Forces medically unfit to perform his or her military duties.

  • Pregnancy disability means a pregnancy-related medical condition or miscarriage.

  • Moral turpitude means conduct that is wrong in itself even if no statute were to prohibit the conduct; and

  • Disease means an alteration in the state of the body or of some of its organs, interrupting or disturbing the performance of the functions, and causing or threatening pain and weakness or physical or mental disorder and certified by a Medical Practitioner.

  • Terminal Illness means a person is diagnosed by a Physician to have a prognosis of 12 months or less to live.

  • Child with a disability means a child who, by reason of any of the following, needs special education and related services:

  • maternity or paternity leave of absence means, for Plan Years beginning after December 31, 1984, an absence from work for any period by reason of the Employee's pregnancy, birth of the Employee's child, placement of a child with the Employee in connection with the adoption of such child, or any absence for the purpose of caring for such child for a period immediately following such birth or placement. For this purpose, Hours of Service shall be credited for the computation period in which the absence from work begins, only if credit therefore is necessary to prevent the Employee from incurring a 1-Year Break in Service, or, in any other case, in the immediately following computation period. The Hours of Service credited for a "maternity or paternity leave of absence" shall be those which would normally have been credited but for such absence, or, in any case in which the Administrator is unable to determine such hours normally credited, eight (8) Hours of Service per day. The total Hours of Service required to be credited for a "maternity or paternity leave of absence" shall not exceed 501.
