Homo definition

Homo in Greek means ‘same’ and in Latin ‘gender’. Another term ‘homophile’ (‘homos’ means ‘same’ and ‘philein’ means ‘to love’) which expresses more of romantic interest in same sex than sexual interaction. Since the word, ‘homosexual’ is too clinical men of this kind prefer to be called gay or queer and women lesbian or dyke. However ‘queer’ and ‘dyke’ are used to humiliate these people so can be offensive. When this kind of sexual orientation is kept a secret, it is said to be ‘in the closet’. They do so, for the fear of the dangerous consequences they may have to face. But when people have the courage to admit such association, they are said to be ‘out of the closet’ or ‘proud’. The word ‘proud’ here does not mean that they are proud of the ‘act’ they are involved in, but means the opposite of ‘shame’. It implies that they are not ashamed of themselves for the uncommon ways they follow but are happy and celebrate it.
Homo means “the same”. The word homozygous means the two alleles the organism has for a given gene are the same. For example, if we think about the eye colour gene, there might be two alleles, b for blue eyes and B for brown eyes. An organism homozygous for that gene has two alleles which are the same, e.g. they have two B alleles or two b alleles, making their genotype BB or bb.
Homo means ‘the same’. ‘Phone’ means ‘sound’.
