Generative definition

Generative. = with finite means (words + rules), generate an infinite number of distinct sentences
Generative literally means: producing. Thus, we will distinguish between a generative grammar and a ‘descriptive’ grammar. The dif- ference is that the former produces the structures of the language while the latter just tells us how they look like. Grammatical theories that have been proposed can be categorized into either the generative class or the descriptive class, but mixtures are possible and are in fact the rule rather than the exception. If however we are only interested in the set of structures rather than the actual process of obtaining them, then it becomes hard to attribute any significance to this distinction. GPSG may be viewed as a sophisticated version of a generative the- ory of language, but it can easily be presented as a descriptive theory.
Generative in generative grammar means “explicit” (Chomsky (1986a: 3)). In Chomsky (1965), the word “generative” is employed as meaning “explicit” or “well-defined,” as shown in (i).
